Driving to Kurokawa Onsen: routes, roads and winter conditions

A car turns Kurokawa from a destination into a stop on a loop. It also reaches the outlying inns the buses do not, which is most of the good ones.

Your Step by Step Route

The steps from the bus stop to the baths, in the order you will take them.

1

Step 1

Pick your trunk road

-

Three roads feed the village: Route 212 from Hita, Route 57 from Kumamoto, and the Yamanami Highway from Yufuin.

Full details

Routes 57 and 212 bring you to Minamioguni or Oguni. The Yamanami Highway brings you to Senomoto. All three are ordinary sealed roads and all three are beautiful, which is the point of driving here in the first place.

2

Step 2

From Fukuoka or Hakata

about 2 h 30

Dazaifu interchange, then Tosu junction, then leave the expressway at Hita.

Full details

From Hita interchange it is about 60 kilometres, 37 miles, and roughly an hour on Route 212 down into the valley. This is the fastest approach from the north and the one most rental cars take.

3

Step 3

From Kumamoto or Kumamoto Airport

about 1 h 30

Head for the Milk Road, prefectural route 339, across the top of the Aso caldera.

Full details

The Milk Road is a ridge road with the caldera on one side and the Kuju range on the other. It is the single best drive of the trip and it is worth timing for daylight even if it costs you an hour elsewhere.

4

Step 4

From Beppu, Yufuin or Kitakyushu

about 2 h

Beppu interchange or Otemachi, then Hiji junction, then off at Kuju.

Full details

From Kuju the Yamanami Highway runs south-west to Senomoto and down to Kurokawa. Combining this with the Beppu and Yufuin onsen towns makes the classic Kyushu hot-spring loop, and it is far easier by car than by bus.

5

Step 5

Park and walk

-

Every ryokan has parking and the village itself is walked, not driven.

Full details

Leave the car where you are staying. The lanes are narrow, the baths are minutes apart on foot, and the whole point of the tegata is wandering between them in a yukata. In winter check chain and stud rules before you set out; the mountain sections ice up on cold mornings.

Good to know

  • A car turns Kurokawa from a destination into a base. The caldera, Nabegataki and the Kujū highlands all come within a morning's reach.

  • Park in your inn's lot. Roadside parking is not permitted in the village and the lanes have no slack to give.

  • The last hour of the drive is highland country, not city road. Allow more time than the map suggests and prefer a daylight arrival.

  • In winter, treat snow tyres as the baseline and carry chains in a cold snap. The caldera approach roads ice.

  • Check the association's live weather and traffic page before setting off. Road conditions here change faster than any forecast.
