Reach Aso Station
Reach Aso Station by JR Hōhi Line (70–90 minutes from Kumamoto) or from your caldera lodging; the bus stops stand right outside.

The compact station puts the Ōdan stop directly outside, and the Michi-no-Eki roadside station next door covers coffee, lunch and souvenirs if your connection gaps. Aso is an active volcano, but crater alert levels never affect this bus, which crosses the outer highlands; check crater status separately only if the day's plan includes the crater itself.

Ride north over the plateau

About 50 minutes up the caldera's inner wall, across the Senomoto grasslands with the Kujū range ahead, then down to Kurokawa.

This is arguably the prettiest hour of public transit in Kyushu: the inner caldera wall, the Senomoto plateau's grassland panoramas, and the cedar valleys of Minamioguni dropping toward the village. Sit on the right northbound for the Kujū views. Fares have risen recently; the fare is ¥1,600 (about US$11) and confirm the current figure when you reserve on Japan Bus Online. If the Ōdan bus is full: The Odan bus needs a reservation and there are only three a day. The Sanko local bus on the Tsuetate line does not, and it runs when the highway bus is gone.

Walk into the village

The Kurokawa stop is two to five minutes from the lanes; walk in, or wait for an arranged inn pickup on arrival.

From the stop the village opens on foot. Build the day around the departure you take: the 9:56 follows a morning train from Kumamoto and lands you before 11 for a full tegata afternoon, while the 14:51 suits a morning of Aso sightseeing first. Note the last return toward Aso and Kumamoto leaves Kurokawa in the late afternoon (recently 16:25). Miss the bus and a station taxi runs 35–45 minutes, sensible split among a group.
