Bathing etiquette in Kurokawa, for the bath-hopper

The full canon of onsen etiquette lives on the Japan Onsen Society hub, and none of it changes here. What Kurokawa adds is a situation most towns never create: bathing your way through other people's inns on a wooden pass. These are the local rules of that game, briefly.

The universals, in one breath

Bookable by the hour. The forest does the rest.

Rinse and wash at the taps before entering; bathe nude, swimwear stays in the bag; the small towel goes on your head or the ledge, never in the water; tie up long hair; no photos past the changing-room door; hydrate between soaks. The bath-hopper's additions

Tegata bathing means visiting baths that provide nothing: most day-use rotenburo offer no towels, soap, or shampoo, so the hopper's kit is a small towel, travel soap, and a plastic bag for the damp between stops, with coin change for the occasional locker and for single-bath fees (¥500–800 / ~$3.50–5.50) beyond your three stamps. Present the tegata at the inn's front desk, receive your stamp and directions, and follow the marked path to the bath, which brings us to the rule that actually distinguishes Kurokawa.

You are inside someone's inn

Every tegata bath sits within a working ryokan hosting its own overnight guests. The etiquette follows: stay on the marked route between entrance and bath rather than exploring corridors and gardens, keep voices low near guest rooms, skip the lobby photography, and clear out of changing rooms briskly at busy hours. Day-use windows run roughly 8:30 am to 9 pm and vary by inn; arriving inside the window and leaving by its close is part of the courtesy, and the 8:30–21:00 norm is worth re-checking at the desk for any bath you visit late in the day.

And the used tegata, by local custom, retires to the Jizo shrine rather than the trash, the village's most charming rule and the only one enforced purely by charm.
