Hakata Bus Terminal sits directly alongside Hakata Station, so a shinkansen arrival transfers on foot. Most services then call at Fukuoka Airport's bus stops a few minutes later, which means an international arrival can board without entering the city at all. Luggage rides in the hold rather than the cabin. Arrive a few minutes early; these are reserved-seat coaches and they leave on time.

The final stretch through Minamioguni's cedar country is the scenic overture to the village, and the left-hand side carries the valley views on the climb. Fare is ¥4,000 (about US$27) one way; round-trip and pair discounts appear seasonally, and the SUNQ all-Kyushu pass covers the route.

Alight at Kurokawa Onsen

Kurokawa Onsen bus stop is at the edge of the village beside the ryokan association's information centre, where the tegata is sold and the daily bath board is posted. Most inns are a two-to-five-minute walk down the stone lanes. Inns will collect luggage or guests by arrangement — worth requesting in winter, when the lanes ice and a suitcase becomes an argument. Timing the return: Take a morning departure out; the last buses back to Fukuoka leave late afternoon, which decides everything.
