The gorge wakes late; at Kurokawa's highland altitude, bare branches hold into early April, then the valley greens in a rush. Cherries arrive as scattered mountain trees against cedar, typically mid-April, weeks behind the lowland front, lovely and local rather than a destination bloom, which is exactly the correct expectation to pack. May delivers the season's peak: new leaf over the river, meltwater fullness under the bridges, and the planted forests of the village's revival at their brightest. Early June adds rain-glossed lanes and hydrangea touches before the wet season proper.

Bathing in spring

Spring is arguably the technician's bathing season: air mild enough for long rotenburo sessions at any hour, water contrast still real at night and dawn, and no winter walk-penalty between tegata stamps. The riverside baths, Yamamizuki's woods and Sanga's gorge, gain the most, since their settings are the show and spring lights them gently. Follow the standard rhythm, afternoon stamp, night soak, dawn bath, with longer sessions than winter permits.

The season's practical gifts

Rooms: the year's easiest, with even the famous houses showing midweek availability on reasonable notice, and the budget tier at its most accessible. Roads: clear, making spring the driver's season for pairing the village with the caldera, Daikanbō's rim and the greening grasslands, per the day-trips page. Golden Week (late April into early May) is the one exception to everything above: full village, peak pricing, book months out or skip the week entirely.

Eating spring

Two dozen inns, three lanes, and a board that assumes you are walking.

Kitchens turn to sansai, the mountain vegetables that headline the Aso spring: bamboo shoots, warabi and kogomi ferns, wild greens tempura, alongside the year-round akaushi and river fish. It is the inn table's most local season, and modest houses often show it best.
