Kurokawa is not on the way to anywhere. Reaching it takes a bus into the caldera, and it repays the effort only slowly.

Kurokawa is small, but small does not mean quick. Its best hours — dusk, night, dawn — are the ones only sleeping there unlocks.

One night, well sequenced, is the whole of Kurokawa: bath, kaiseki, lantern lanes, dawn river. Here are those hours, in order.

One night samples Kurokawa; two nights complete it. The second day buys the caldera excursion, the full tegata, and a quieter second dawn.

Asked what there is to do besides bathe, Kurokawa answers quietly: walk, snack, sit by the river, then look outward to the valley.

Kurokawa sits on the shoulder of a great caldera. Within an hour lie a walk-behind waterfall, a rim view, and an active crater.
