Arriving by air, board at the airport itself rather than backtracking into the city; both daily services call there, about two hours from the airport to the village. If timings off a midday flight run tight or long, a taxi or rental car covers the airport-to-Kurokawa leg in 75–90 minutes, the one stretch where self-driving genuinely competes.

Cross the Aso caldera

On clear days this is Kyushu's best transit scenery: the caldera walls, the crater country, then the grassland plateau toward the Kujū range. Sit on the left leaving Kumamoto for the caldera views. Fares have risen recently, so the fare is ¥3,400 (about US$23) from the city and confirm the current figure when you book, as older sources quote less. If the Ōdan bus fails you: When Ōdan seats or times fail you, ride JR to Aso Station, then connect to the same bus's Aso–Kurokawa leg.

From the Kurokawa Onsen stop the village opens on foot, and nothing here needs wheels. Keep the return in mind when planning: the last bus back toward Kumamoto leaves Kurokawa in the late afternoon (recently 16:25), which frames any caldera-side day trip. Buy the nyūtō tegata at your inn or the Kaze-no-ya information center once you arrive. The bus sets you down at the village stop. The baths begin a few minutes' walk away, and most inns will collect you if you ask when you book.
